Welding chosen for the duty, not for convenience

Welding is the process most often specified badly on a drawing and most often blamed afterwards. Process, filler, preparation, sequence and distortion control are decided by what the joint has to do: carry load, hold pressure, survive a wash-down regime, or simply look right under a spotlight.

The works holds MIG, TIG and spot welding capability. TIG is used where the weld is visible, where the material is thin, and for stainless and aluminium work where heat input and contamination control matter. MIG carries the structural and higher-deposition work. Spot welding covers sheet assemblies where a fusion weld would distort the panel.

Distortion is managed by sequence and by jigging rather than by straightening afterwards. On assemblies that have to fit existing structure, we trial-assemble before despatch.

  • Finish requirement: ground flush, dressed, linished, polished or as-welded
  • Whether trial assembly against existing structure is needed before despatch

Questions we are actually asked

Common questions

No. We do not hold welder coding or approved welding procedures, and we do not undertake work that requires them. If your specification calls for welders qualified to BS EN ISO 9606, procedures qualified to ISO 15614, or third-party inspection against a coded procedure, you need a coded shop, and we will tell you that at enquiry rather than at delivery.

Most real assemblies use both, chosen joint by joint rather than for the whole job.

Yes. TIG on both, with resistance spot welding available on sheet assemblies where a fusion weld would distort the panel. On stainless the specification usually needs to state the finish as well as the joint, because a weld that is structurally perfect can still be rejected on appearance.

By sequence and by jigging rather than by straightening afterwards. Weld sequencing, staggered and back-step technique, and fixturing where the assembly justifies it. Straightening after the fact is slower, less reliable, and on a visible fabrication it usually shows. On assemblies that have to fit existing structure we trial-assemble before despatch.

Yes, in the works or on site. Repair welding, reinforcement and modification of installed metalwork are ordinary work here. See site and project support. Photographs of the existing item, and of how it failed, are the most useful thing you can send.

Not in-house. Independent testing (dye penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic or radiographic) can be arranged through established supply-chain partners where a specification calls for it. Say so at enquiry so it is priced into the job rather than discovered halfway through it.
